Medications

Common medications to help treat an enlarged prostate include Alpha-Blockers and 5-Alpha Reductase Inhibitors.  Alpha blockers typically help relieve symptoms within a few weeks but do not stop the process of prostate enlargement.  5-alpha reductase inhibitors may reduce the size of an enlarged prostate, but may take up to 6 months or more before there is a noticeable effect.

Alpha-blockers help treat benign Prostatic hypertrophy by relaxing smooth muscle tissue found in the neck of the bladder. This allows urine to flow more easily.

Side Effects

Side effects of alpha-blockers can include:
  • Fatigue and Weakness
  • Dizziness, lightheadedness, or fainting when you stand up suddenly.  This occurs because your blood pressure may suddenly drop as you stand up suddenly (orthostatic or postural hypotension)
  • Headaches
  • Retrograde ejaculation (ejaculation back into the bladder).  This is usually not harmful.

These side effects should go away when the medication is stopped.

5-alpha reductase inhibitors have work against the effects of certain male hormones on the prostate. This slows the growth of the prostate and can even cause it to become smaller, which may help improve the symptoms of benign Prostatic hypertrophy. These medications are usually for men with noticeably large prostates and can lower prostate-specific antigen levels. There is evidence that it may take up to 6 to 12 months before symptom improvement is noticeable.

Side effects of 5-alpha reductase inhibitors can include:

  • Decrease sex drive
  • Difficulty obtaining an erection
  • Increased ejaculatory dysfunction

You Are Not Alone -
By age 50, about half of all men have begun to develop an enlarged prostate - And by age 80, 90 percent of all men have the condition. (NIH Publication No. 04–3012 “Prostate Enlargement: Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia” February 2004)

After age 50 about 18.4% of all men report sometimes or never able to get and keep an erection (new research sponsored by the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases - NIDDK).
